NYFF event for new filmmakers

Film Society of Lincoln Center and IFP have teamed to launch the Emerging Visions program, an initiative for up-and-coming creatives to run during the NY Film Festival. A roster of 25 filmmakers selected for the program will meet with established helmers and producers including Shari Springer Berman, Barbara Kopple. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Doug Liman, as well as participate in a pitching session with indie types such as Christine Vachon and John Sloss. Organizers of the program hope the sessions will help the launch the up-and-comers' careers. List of emerging filmmakers tapped for the program includes Alrick Brown ("Kinyarwanda"), Adam Bowers ("New Low") and Lanre Olabisi ("August the First"), among others. Hannibal Lecter Heading To TV

Okey-dokey. Here we go.... There was a time when Hannibal Lecter was a properly chilling less-is-more villain with minimal screentime and maximum impact. Gradually though, he's become everyone's favourite mischievous uncle, and we'll get to spend even more time with him when Gaumont's Hannibal series arrives on TV. Hannibal is an inaugural project for the new LA-based outpost of the French film studio, and will be executive produced by Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller, and Martha De Laurentiis, who was behind the most recent three Lecter films, Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. It's unclear whether original author Thomas Harris is involved. The premise revolves around the back story discussed in Red Dragon (film and book) and Manhunter: the early relationship between psychiatrist Lecter and FBI profiler Will Graham, who can see inside the heads of serial killers. Quite how this will play out week-by-week remains to be seen. Are we looking at one story per season? Or individual stories about Lecter killing sprees and Graham on his trail? Or individual stories about Graham on cases, visiting Lecter for advice occasionally? Or a mismatched buddies double act, where Howlin' Mad Hannibal must be regularly sprung from the Baltimore State Hospital for another crazy adventure?Whatever, there are no showrunners or writers attached so far, and no cast yet chosen to fill the shoes previously inhabited by Anthony Hopkins, Brian Cox, William Peterson and Edward Norton. Gallic director Claude Lelouch's distribution operation Les Films 13 has snapped up French rights to Belgian Geoffrey Enthoven's Montreal fest hit "Come as You Are" (aka "Hasta la vista"). Deal comes as a second title sold by the Berlin-based and Films Distribution-owned Films Boutique, Alexander Sokurov's Venice Competish player is seeing a flurry of sales and offers after an upbeat Lido reception. Written by Pierre De Clerq, seriocomedy "Come" turns on three special-needs men who take a road-trip together to lose their virginity. "Come" will be released theatrically in France on 100-150 prints, a considerable print run for pic, which won Montreal's Grand Prize of the Americas. " 'Come as You Are' totally got me," Lelouch said. "When a film manages to be an art film as well as a popular comedy, then you are close to a masterpiece." K Film Amerique has acquired Canadian Rights. Screening at Toronto's market, "Come" will be released in Belgium by Kinepolis later this month. Adam, floater extraordinaire and new head of household, can no longer follow the power, Big Brother host Julie Chen tells us at the top of the show. Why? Because he is the power. But that's completely true. Although the bearded Tori Spelling stalker is indeed in charge of making the nominations, the person really running the game is the winner of tonight's power of veto competition. So, who won? And which players are now in the final three? Let's find out.Even Adam seems to believe he's the one holding all the cards this week. "I have three beautiful women working for me," he says. And while he did finally win HOH and earned a basket of bacon-themed junk, he still hasn't necessarily proven himself to be a good player.Take, for example, his exchange with Jordan. Once she suspects that Adam may be thinking of taking Porsche to the final three (and likely final two), Jordan can't help but tell Adam how "fuss-trated" she is with him. And rather than defend himself, or make any kind of argument, really, he just sits and giggles and makes things worse for himself.In truth, he kind of did confess to Porsche that having two newbies in the finals would be nice. And while I agree it would be more fun not to see a repeat player on finale night, Adam would have an incredibly hard time beating both Rachel and Porsche in the final HOH. Jordan? Not so much. However, Adam is smart enough to know that if he wants to possibly take out Rachel, his best bet is to not nominate her, which perhaps will keep her from playing as hard in the veto as she would if she were on the block.And indeed, Adam smartly puts up Porsche and Jordan for eviction. He says he wants both girls to know what it feels like to fight hard and earn your safety, just like he did earlier this week. The veto competition requires players to answer questions by stacking blocks with evicted houseguests' names on them in the appropriate order.Porsche smartly stacks the blocks on the ground before moving them into position, as removing them one at a time if she's wrong is extra time consuming. Adam thinks he's nailing the whole thing, Rachel is running around like a crazy person and Jordan....well, she looks confused as ever. Ultimately, Porsche completes the puzzle first and wins the most important veto of the summer.And, here comes Rachel's tears. She bawls about how she can't do anything right and that she wanted to win for Brendon. "This game is so hard," she says. She mopes and whines until Jordan tells he how great she is and how she deserves to stay over Jordan. It honestly seems as if Jordan is already convinced she's going home. Rachel finally gets herself together and makes a pitch to Porsche. Rachel says she voted for Porsche over Kalia and says Porsche has a better chance of winning in the final two over Rachel than Jordan. (I personally think that's not true.) Anyway, Porsche seems to like Rachel's rationale.So, when it comes time for the veto ceremony, Porsche (shocker!) uses the veto to save herself. Rachel and Jordan's final pleas are all rainbows and hugs and kisses to everyone left in the game. But even though everyone loves everyone else so much, Porsche gives Jordan the boot. (At least Jordan got one good line in before she left: Commenting on how little she knows Porsche, Jordan said "I know you like to wear bikinis and host competitions.")In her goodbye message to Jordan, Porsche claims that she couldn't risk Jordan not taking her to the final two. (She assumes, perhaps correctly, that Jordan would have chosen Adam over her.) Here's what I think both Porsche and Adam fail to realize: Rachel is a beast at competitions when her life is on the line. I think she will almost certainly win the endurance leg of the final HOH competition; in my mind she will win the whole thing. I think Rachel will beat either person she brings to the finals simply because the jury house is going to reward a competitor over a floater. Conversely, who in the jury would give Jordan the money twice? I think Porsche made a $500,000 mistake.But we shall see! The episode ends with the final three spinning on a Big Brother mixer. Whoever hangs on the longest while being pelted with goo and dipped into butter will win an automatic bye to the third part of the competition. Tahrir Square doc takes spaghetti Western route

The spring Egyptian revolt in Cairo's Tahrir Square has prompted a deluge of docus. But "Tahrir 2011 -- The Good, the Bad, and the Politician" is likely to be the only one loosely inspired by a spaghetti Western."I wanted to do the same event from different perspectives, so Sergio Leone's 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' came to mind," said Amr Salama, one of three helmers of the sometimes playful docu structured in three half-hour chapters."It gives you the whole perspective. It's a like a three-dimensional film, in a way," said Salama, who handled "The Politician" section, which delves into the psyche of toppled dictator Hosni Mubarak.Salama's section is a satirical take on "how to become a dictator in 10 steps," he said, "as if it were a bad infomercial; and the 10th step is the denial and how a dictator falls."He said he sourced it from people who spent time with Mubarak in his final days in power, "especially the guy who spent the last 48 hours with him before he stepped down." It's "almost a mockumentary, with a surreal, satirical approach." That is "because when I was making it I was so stressed, that I could not take it seriously." For Ayten Amin, who shot "The Bad" section dedicated to the country's police and security forces, the film is first and foremost "a personal journey.""Before the revolution I never did anything political, and I never talked to a police officer," she said.Not surprisingly, most the police officers she interviewed did not want to talk to her, at least not at first."All the interviews went on for five or six hours; but the last 30 minutes were the most important because they just got tired of lying," she said.In a way, Tamer Ezzat, who handled "The Good," about the ordinary heroes in Tahrir Square, may have had the easiest task. "For me it was obvious. I really identified with who the good people were and who the bad people were," he said.But he had to sift through a massive amount of material. "Our editor has established a media center in the middle of Tahrir Square where we received donated footage shot on cellphones and video cameras. We used that as our starting point." For all of them it's important that this film was partly made by the people who were active in the revolution. They also used Twitter and Facebook to ask folks to provide them with footage. And they got more than 300 gigabytes' worth."The people gave us their material because they appreciated the power of documenting this revolution for future generations," Samara said.Docu, being sold by Pacha Pictures, segues to Toronto and a slew of other fests.
