'Dr. Phil' now No. 1 daytime talk show

'Dr. Phil' has emerged as syndication's most-watched talkshow.Halfway through the February sweep, CBS Television Distribution's "Dr. Phil" is cementing its status as syndication's most-watched talkshow, finally inheriting the mantle from Dr. Phil's mentor, Oprah Winfrey.Until CTD's "The Oprah Winfrey Show" left daytime last fall, "Dr. Phil" had no chance to be TV's top talker because it was contractually forbidden from competing against "Oprah." That kept "Phil" out of 4 p.m. time slots, the time period that has the highest levels of people watching television in daytime. With "Oprah" gone, "Dr. Phil" has been upgraded in four markets, which can account for some of the show's growth, but not all of it. The show also has secured several high-profile exclusive interviews and stuck close to the cultural climate."Dr. Phil" closed out the November sweep up 7% over last year to a 3.2 same-day household average, according to Nielsen. Five days into the February sweep, "Dr. Phil" is averaging a 3.3 household rating, a 6% jump over last year's February sweep. That "Dr. Phil" is holding its own is a big reversal over 2009, when the show had declined 22%, bowing at a 2.5 same-day household rating. Today, it's back to its pre-2009 levels."Dr. Phil" is particularly strong on CBS' KYW Philadelphia, where it's averaging a 3.7 rating/9 share at 4 p.m., up 37% from news last year, and up 28% from last year when it aired at 5 p.m. It's also doing well on CBS' WUSA Washington, D.C., where it's up 22% at 4 p.m., compared with CTD's "The Doctors," which occupied the slot last year. On Belo's independent Phoenix station, KTVK, "Dr. Phil" is improving two time periods at 1 p.m., where it's up 44%; and 7 p.m., where the show is up 7%.Though the most popular talkshow overall, "Dr. Phil" is running second for the season in adults 18-49 (0.9 rating), well behind "Maury" (1.3). It's closer in adults 25-54, where "Phil" is just a tick behind "Maury" (1.1 vs. 1.2). Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Ghost Rider,' 'This Means War,' And More: Double Feature Friday!

If one movie a night is never enough for you and you're looking for a flick to get you in the mood for this week's new release, Double Feature Friday is here to help. This new weekly column takes a look at the week's releases and pairs them with a complimentary film to watch before, after or as a substitution. "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" & "Drive Angry" Nicolas Cage in 3D is not something you just jump into unprepared. For your own personal safety, we have to recommend familiarizing yourself with the pressures and anxieties of seeing Nic Cage projected onto the big screen in all three dimensions. "Drive Angry" in 3D will be enough of a pregame, so that when Cage's head bursts into flames in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," yours won't do the same. "This Means War" & "Black Hawk Down" When it comes to choosing between the two movies where Tom Hardy works as an employee of the United State government, Ridley Scott's 2001 real-life war drama easily edges out the new romantic comedy. Granted you lose out on the romance aspect, the action in "Black Hawk Down" will be a lot more satisfying even without a love triangle. Plus, you'll get to play everyone's favorite game "Who Isn't In 'Black Hawk Down'?" The answer is "no one." Every actor ever is in "Black Hawk Down." "The Secret World of Arrietty" & "Spirited Away" When Disney releases an anime, it's safe to assume that the legendary director Hayao Miyazaki is involved. In the case of "The Secret World of Arrietty," you'll have to look a little harder for Miyazaki's name, but he's there as the film's screenwriter. One of his longtime animators, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, takes over as director for this adaptation of "The Borrowers." There is no better way to prepare for "Arrietty" than sitting back and enjoying one of Miyazaki's classics. Since it's Oscar season, we suggest checking out "Spirited Away," the film that won the second ever Best Animated Feature award. "Thin Ice" & "Fargo" A down-on-his-luck middle-class sap gets caught up in a criminal plot gone awry in this wintery dark comedy. The log line works perfect for both "Thin Ice" and the Coen Brothers' classic "Fargo," and while the former has earned some decent reviews on its own, the similarities between the two are hard to escape. If you have never seen "Fargo" or haven't watched it in a while, now is the perfect time to catch up with one of the best films of the 90s. Get more box office breakdowns in this week's Talk Nerdy! Tell us which movies you'll be seeing in the comments section and on Twitter!

Greys Anatomy-Private Practice Crossover Scoop: The Shepherd Siblings Reunite Again!

Jeff Probst, Benjamin "Coach" Wade [SPOILER ALERT: This article reveals key plot details from the season premiere of Survivor: One World.]Survivor: One World, which premiered Wednesday, is going to be very different. Here's why: For the first time in the show's 23-season history, both tribes will share one camp from the get-go. They're free to share, barter, form alliances with their rivals - pretty much anything goes. The tribes have been divided into men vs. women, and they've done away with Redemption Island. We, of course, have our own opinions about what went down during Wednesday's premiere, but we thought it would be insightful (and fun) to get feedback from a Survivor veteran, one of the most notorious, controversial competitors to ever play the game. Benjamin "Coach" Wade has participated in three different seasons of the show, and while he's never won, he was last season's runner-up. Read on to see what Coach thinks of Survivor: One World. What was your initial thought when you found out the tribes were sharing a camp?Coach: One World on the same beach? Amazing. What a great twist. With that many people on the same beach, it's bound to be two or three times the drama.Probst also announced the teams would be split men vs. women. Do you think the women are at an extreme disadvantage?Coach: They have strength and brains, but what the women have against them right now is unity. When you're not unified, you're not going to win challenges. At tribal, they got so catty. What do you think of the men's team?Coach: It's a "Tool Academy" alliance with Matt and his boys. That one scene of them walking toward the camp - the smug looks on their faces... You can tell they're all talk. It's common sense to be friendly with the girls and not make war. That macho front, the whole "we don't need the girls" attitude? The moves you make early on in the game will be remembered by both tribes. And the men have drawn a pretty strong wall down the middle.Check out photos from Survivor: One WorldTarzan, who by the way is a plastic surgeon (never would have thought!) says that you are the Survivor contestant most similar to him because you are "a romantic, adventurer, poetic and creative." What are your initial impressions of Tarzan? Coach: Flattery will get you everywhere! He was interesting because there are so many levels of ego on the male tribe, and even though he came off very strong in the beginning, he's got a couple feathers in his hat. First of all, he likes me. Second, he works really hard, and third, he seems smart enough to sit on the back burner. Also, he doesn't look like a plastic surgeon.Would you have given the girls fire? You need to play nice and give them some fire. Share the fire, share the chickens, try to play nice... and then stab them in the back.Should the men have taken immunity or finished the competition? It was a cowardly move. I don't want weak players or weak moves out there. They were cowards when they said to the girls, "You would have done the same thing," trying to justify it. Just don't say anything! What advice do you have for the players based on what you've seen so far?For the men's team, the misfits should bond together and start voting off someone that is a cancer from the Tool Academy. Colton -- with that much testosterone around, he's lucky he got that idol. He would have gone home if he hadn't been given immunity. You have to be a lot more subtle. I really hope the women get it together. I'd like to see girl power.Get more of the latest entertainment newsIs there anyone you see as a stand-out competitor at this point? For the guys' team, I think the front-runner is Jay. He's an alpha male, but he'll have sense enough to subtly weave his way into the girls' side. For the girls... Chelsea, the way she caught those chickens! That was crazy. I couldn't believe she did that. She's tough. Also, Monica - I can tell she's going to be subtle and not get into the arguments. What's it like for you, watching now that you're not playing?I totally said after this last time, "I'm never going back," but you start to watch the new season and you're sitting on the outside and there's such a strong sense of nostalgia. It's surreal. It's such a cornerstone of the reality TV market and to have been a part of it three times. I feel pretty lucky.Survivor: One World airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on CBS.
